CLINIC: Light, Sound & Motion Animation for Model Railroads

DESCRIPTION: Lights and sounds have become commonplace in our model locomotives. But this clinic will explore some ways to add light, sound and motion to your layout. Various projects will be described and demonstrated, some using commercial products, others with electronic circuit details for construction provided. The clinic will cover animation of semaphore signals and crossing gates. The clinic will make ample use of actual implemented projects on Fred’s HO Traction modules.

CLINIC: Construction of a Model K1 Trolley Controller
DAY: Friday	TIME: 7:00-8:00p	ROOM: Radnor
DESCRIPTION: This clinic presents the design and construction of a model K-1 Trolley Car Controller. The project includes use of Arduino micro-controllers to sense the use of various controls and issue applicable DCC commands through Digitrax LocoNet. The Controller includes throttle notching, air brake functions, airline pressure metering, circuit breaker simulations, door and gong operations – all with appropriate sounds.

CLINIC: Tips for Constructing Electronic Projects for Model Railroads
DAY: Saturday	TIME: 8:00-9:00a	ROOM: Wayne
DESCRIPTION: This clinic presents a number of design and construction steps which have proved useful in electronic projects for model railroads. A simple micro-controlled blinking LEDs project (e.g. crossing signals) will be used to demonstrate the various tips and techniques.

About the Clinician...

Fred has been engaged in model railroading activities for over 70 years. Until his retirement from the corporate world, he focused his daytime energies on directing large IBM computer data centers, but now continues to participate in his lifelong hobby of model railroading. His current modeling activity includes a HO Scale “shelf layout” based on a circa 1925 period.

Over the years he has modeled, photographed and written about model railroads in all of the popular modeling scales, achieving his Master Model Railroader (MMR#336) award in 2004. Fred has presented many clinics and held various positions in the NMRA including a 6-year stint as Business Manager for the MER.
