Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad (HO)

Friday 12-4 Earl T Hackett Hockesson, DE 19707 56 minutes
RR Name: Cheasapeake and Ohio HO Scale 35 Miles
Size: 16 x 35 Scenery: 40% Theme: Prototype coal hauling
Era: 1948-1952 Style: Continuous & Branchline Region:  Thurmond, WV
This is an exact model of Thurmond from the switch leading to the freight house to just beyond the coaling tower.  The valuation map was simply reduced to HO scale and plotted on the platform.  The East Yard used by the C&O as a marshaling yard is modeled but used as a staging area.  The bunk house, freight house, the Kincaid building and the Mankin – Cox building have been completed using 3D printing technology. The bridge over the New River (a 200’ Warren truss with several deck girder bridges) is under construction. Currently (mid June) no scenery has been completed, but some rough scenery should be in place by October.  Track is all hand laid on poplar ties with #10 or #12 switches on the mainline, #8 switches in yard areas, and #6 or #7 switches serving the coal mine that I salvaged from my previous layout.

A few years ago I tore down my previous layout to start construction of a layout concept that I had been dreaming of for 30 years. Way back then I tried, but concluded that I just couldn't do it. With 3D printing I decided to give it a shot. I'll be doing two clinics/presentations at the convention. One will show what you can do with 3D printing - it can get pretty extreme. The other shows the layout I'm currently working on. I've taken a section of an actual railroad, reduced it to HO scale with no compression, and it is currently under construction. The handlaid track is complete for the main line, staging tracks, and the engine terminal.. Scenery is non existent except for the little bit salvaged from the previous layout. By the time of the convention I hope to have the bridge across the New River installed.

So I've attached photos of some of the structures I've completed. They are a combination of 3D resin printing and conventional stripwood construction except that I mill my own stripwood. As you can see from the last image, the layout itself is in the early stages of construction so it would be best to serve as a going home layout for those heading for VA or northern NC.
