CLINIC: 3D Modeling

DESCRIPTION: This clinic will explore the use of 3D printing in model railroading, including present technology and future applications. It will explain where the 3D printing industry is today and some of the items that can be 3D printed including structures, detail parts, vehicles and figures. Various technologies available in both home printing and through commercial print services will be discussed. Current limitations are explained, and how improvements to the technology may allow expanded use in the future. Examples of 3D printed objects will be available for inspection, and a home 3D printer that retails for under $200 will be displayed in operation. 3D design will also be introduced with a basic demonstration of a design program.

About the Clinician...

David Yale is a life-long Connecticut resident. He started modeling HO scale as a teen on the typical 4x8 sheet of plywood, and built a FSM roundhouse kit when he was 15. During college he dabbled in N Scale, but became an arm chair modeler for a few decades while he had a career as a police officer and later a lawyer.

About six years ago he got back into the hobby and he is a member of Valley HO Trak, a modular club. In addition to model railroading and 3D printing, he has interests in photography, electronics using Arduino microcomputers, and genealogy. He can be reached through his website, www.dcyale.com.
